How do you demonstrate that automated decisions remain within their original approval after change?

After a model update, a retraining cycle, or a change in operating conditions — can your team provide auditable evidence that the system still acts within the mandate under which it was originally approved? Most cannot. That is not a monitoring problem. It is an authorization continuity problem.

The audit question that remains unanswered

Most teams can show performance. Very few can show continued authorization.

After a model change, a compliance officer or auditor asks: how do you know this system is still operating within the scope and conditions under which it was originally approved?

The answer is usually one of these: "We monitor performance metrics." "We ran regression tests." "We have documentation from the original approval."

None of these answer the question. They answer whether the system works. They do not answer whether the system is still authorized to continue under the current conditions.

This is not a gap in monitoring. It is a gap in governance. And it is now a documented, text-verifiable gap in both NIST AI RMF 1.0 and ISO/IEC 42001:2023.

The three questions
After an update — is the decision still within its original mandate?
Model behavior changes. Scope can drift. The authorization basis established at deployment may no longer match the system's current operational profile.
Typically not auditable
When conditions change — is re-validation triggered?
Regulatory context, data distribution, deployment environment — all can change without triggering formal re-approval. The system continues under an implicit authorization that no longer holds.
No formal trigger exists
In an audit — can you trace the decision back to a valid authorization?
Not the approval document from deployment. The authorization as it should apply today — under current conditions, current model version, current operating scope.
Evidence chain typically missing
The bridge

Most teams can show compliance.
Very few can show continuity.

Compliance answers: were the rules followed at the time of the decision? Continuity answers: is the authorization basis still valid now? These are different questions.

Monitoring answers: is the system behaving as expected? Authorization continuity answers: is the system still permitted to behave this way under its current conditions?

This is not a new problem. It is an unanswered one.

A regulatory change affects the conditions under which the system was approved. The system continues. Has the authorization been re-evaluated against the new regulatory baseline?

Scope expansion
After usage grows beyond original boundaries
Approved for one use case, now handling adjacent ones. The authorization was scope-specific. Expansion without re-approval is a continuity failure — even if performance metrics improve.

Deployment context change
After the operating environment shifts
Data distribution changes, user population shifts, upstream dependencies change. The system was approved under specific environmental assumptions. Those assumptions may no longer hold.

The question to ask

If your system continues when it shouldn't — you need to be able to demonstrate that it stopped. Or why it didn't.
